Advice
Resources I would recommend for those interested in getting into game development (books, tutorials, sites, etc)
Devour as much media as you can get your hands on. Then try to do something no one has done before. When you realize that's nearly impossible, try to combine the best of what you have experienced in a novel and entertaining way.
Favorites
First game I remember playing
I totally pwn3d my friends and family at "Pong". I wish I was kidding...
All-time favorite game
I had a very unhealthy love/hate relationship with "X-COM: UFO Defense". I loved how it rewarded me for taking my time, being methodical, and using sound tactics. I hated that my saved games got either deleted or corrupted on three occasions when I was in the endgame missions.
Non-video gaming hobbies
Board games and RPGs (D&D is for chumps!) still count as gaming so aside from that, I draw, paint, kayak, bike, read, watch movies, swing dance, sample exotic food and drink, and do donuts in the MINI, though not all at the same time (yet).
Favorite bands/music
Tom Waits, They Might Be Giants, Bjork, KMFDM, Irish and Scottish folk music, sea shanties, you know, standard stuff. Whatever it takes to amuse me on my drive to and from work. Once I get here, I listen to whatever Kyle decides to bless or curse us with. For the record, the "Polka Day" was his idea.
Favorite books/authors
Powers, Gaiman, Gibson, Stevenson, Campbell, Newman, Tolkien, Burroughs, and a host of others. I do try to offset pulpy sci-fi, fantasy, and graphic novels with actual literature occasionally. One of the rooms in my condo is filled almost entirely with reference guides on really obscure subjects.
Favorite TV shows
My TiVo records Venture Brothers, Robot Chicken, Family Guy, Lost, Heroes, The Office, Coupling, Spaced, and a ton of Discovery/History/Science Channel documentaries. Sometimes I even get a chance to watch them!
Favorite movies
In the genuinely good category, you can't go wrong with Akira Kurosawa , Coen Brothers, David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock Fritz Lang, Sergei Eisenstein or Dario Argento. In the staggeringly bad category, there are many contenders but you just can't beat Ed Wood.
