Working at Gearbox is HOT
So you want to work at Gearbox? Who doesn’t? Gearbox is an awesome company to work for and we have a lot of fun here. We offer a great benefits package which includes health, dental, long term disability and life insurance, free snacks and sodas, royalties, and much more! We get tons of resumes and portfolios in our game jobs inbox every day. HR’s job is to read resumes, review portfolios, send out tests, and forward info to the teams. I thought you guys might find it helpful if I passed along some tips for getting noticed. Here is a list of tips for getting a job at Gearbox:
General tips:
- Specify which job you are applying for (preferably in the subject line)
- Include your current and target salary
- Proofread your resume
- Keep your resume short and to the point. Your portfolio will say everything so make sure it demonstrates your strengths
- Include a link to your online portfolio or attach some samples
- Be creative and show your personality
- If you were referred by someone at Gearbox or in the industry be sure and mention their name
- You do not have to give away body parts to be hired at Gearbox so please don’t offer!
- It’s better to express interest in the whole company rather than a particular project because you never know which project we might be hiring for
- If your resume links to your website, make sure you don’t have annoying pop-up ads
- Make sure your website is readable and has a clean layout. Don’t have patterned backgrounds that are confusing and conflict with important text
- Don’t spam, whether by phone or by email! There’s persistent and determined, and then there’s annoying. We love you guys but please have mercy on us
Level Design tips:
- Only show your best work. Do not show examples of “my first map with two rooms and a hallway” level. You need to impress people with your showing. Show as many examples as possible but only your absolute best.
- Variety is key. If you are showing examples of 4 different levels, make sure they actually differ. Don’t show 4 levels that all use the same texture set and lighting, and have similar geometry.
Art tips:
- Include statistics such as: triangle count, texture size, how many textures were used, where it was rendered from, references (or indicate if it is your own concept), how long it took to make the model
- Indicate if the model is a work in progress
- Presentation counts! Show wireframes, normal maps, specular maps, and diffuse maps. Exhibit a sense of scale (particularly important for environment modelers)
- If possible, show high poly and low poly versions of your model
Gearbox is a growing company so we look forward to seeing your resumes and portfolios! Please, help fill up the HR inbox. We want to see your skillz!
