Lee's First QuakeCon

QuakeCon is a large LAN party and general celebration of gaming that local Dallas developer id Software throws every year.  Many of us at Gearbox attend every year - some to go to the LAN, some to participate in charity events, and others just for the fun of a big group of gamers all in one place.  This year, Lee A took some photos for us and tells us about his first QuakeCon!

Attended my first QuakeCon this weekend with my friend John who came in from Raleigh, NC & Jason who works with me at Gearbox.   John and I have been wanting to go to QuakeCon since we first got hooked on the game back when the event started, but the journey from Rochester, NY  to Dallas, TX was way beyond our combined incomes in college.   This year's event took place at the Hilton Anatole in Downtown Dallas, about 35 minutes away from Gearbox.

The event was broken up into 2 areas, the gaming LAN room which was this massive room filled with hundreds and hundreds of computers.   The amount of power being consumed was incredible!  Everyone was wired with Bawls and caffeine drinks.

We  saw some amazing looking computer MODS but these were definitely the ones that took the most creativity.    The BBQ  computer MOD was my favorite one since I'm  a griller :P

On the right of the LAN  area contained the tournaments and vendors and a brand new 2008 Corvette

which they were raffling off to random names that were placed inside of this big glass chamber.

The stage was also used for the "Bawls chugging contest" and "what would you do for...."   Dell had this huge bus dedicated to showing off their hardware running the latest games.   The girls from PMS Clan were on hand to destroy all who played them.  ATI also had a big booth demoing the new video cards and games.

I told these guys I wasn't very good at racing games, but I forgot to mention I play GRID pretty well :)

QuakeCon started on Thursday but I only had time to go to the Saturday event, it was a lot of walking, meeting other gamers, networking and playing games.    A good way to beat the 108 degree Dallas summer heat.
